EMA MULTIFOCAL FITTING GUIDELINE
Soft (polymacon) Aspheric Multifocal Contact Lens, Blue Visibility Tint

SUGGESTED PATIENT CRITERIA

  • Corneal astigmatism:

  •      Up to -0.75 x180
         Up to -0.75 x090
  • Habitual distance Rx (greater than ±0.75D)
  • Good motivation
  • Realistic expectations

LENS SELECTION

Standard Parameters
  • Base Curve/Diameter: 8.5/14.5 8.8/14.5
  • Powers: -10.00D to +6.00D in 0.25D steps
  • Custom Parameters available

Flat 'K' Base Curve Diameter
43.75D and steeper 8.5 14.5
43.50 and flatter 8.8 14.5

Calculating Power
Order the patient's distance spectacle sphere (must be in minus cylinder form, ignore the cylinder), and vertex if necessary.

Two versions - Select appropriate ADD Power:
Unilens EMA Low ADD: +0.75D to +1.50D
Unilens EMA High ADD: +1.75D to +2.50D

LENS FITTING

  1. Equilibrate for 10 minutes.

  2. Lens should center well with 0.5 - 1.0mm movement in primary gaze, 1.0 - 1.5mm upward gaze.

  3. Check distance acuity monocularly in normal room illumination.

  4. Over-refract if necessary in 0.25D steps to 20/25.

  5. Check distance acuity binocularly. Over-refract if necessary in 0.25D steps to 20/20.

  6. Check near acuity binocularly, with distance over-refraction still in place.

   SYMPTOM RESOLUTION
  • Unilens E M A prescriptions are calculated differently than other Unilens products. For best success, follow fitting guidelines on the left.

  • Excessive Movement To achieve stability and proper centration:
    Steepen base curve to 8.5

  • Decentration
    Steepen base curve to 8.5

  • Acuity
0.25D makes a significant difference in acuity. Re-check near and distance acuities with over refraction in place

  • Distance visual acuity not acceptable:
    If patient is wearing:

    Two EMA Low ADD lenses:
    Add -0.25D to dominant eye.

    Two EMA High ADD lenses:
    Add -0.25D to dominant eye.
Use EMA Low in dominant eye and EMA High in non-dominant eye

  • Distance visual acuity not acceptable:
    If patient is wearing:

    Two EMA Low ADD lenses:
    Add +0.25D to non-dominant eye.
Use EMA Low in dominant eye and EMA High in non-dominant eye If near vision still not acceptable use High OU.

    Two EMA High ADD lenses:
    Add +0.25D to non-dominant eye.
Use EMA on dominant eye and SimulVue 38 on non-dominant eye.
